The Artefact Story

Artefact Interiors

Artefact Interiors was founded by Kate Hickling, a Mornington Peninsula local who lives and breathes residential design.

Kate’s work is grounded in a simple belief, a home should feel calm, functional, and quietly beautiful, without chasing trends. The best interiors are the ones that make everyday life easier, and still feel special years from now.

A studio built around how you live

Kate is known for her ability to read a space quickly, understand what her clients are drawn to, and then bring clarity to decisions that can otherwise feel overwhelming. Layout, proportion, materials, colour, lighting, furniture, the detail matters, but it should never feel complicated.

Clients come to Artefact when they want a home that feels resolved. Not decorated for a photo, but designed to be lived in.

Timeless, not timid

Artefact interiors are designed to sit naturally within the architecture and surroundings, and to age well. We focus on strong foundations, thoughtful materials, and pieces that feel considered, not overly styled.

That applies whether you’re renovating, building, or refreshing a home you already love.

Furniture and finishing touches, handled properly

We design and produce custom pieces and soft furnishings, including bedheads, upholstery and window treatments, to ensure the final result feels cohesive. When the key pieces are right, the whole home reads differently.

Kate works with a trusted network of local trades, makers and suppliers, and remains closely involved from concept through to installation. The aim is simple, a result you can feel proud of, and a process you actually enjoy.
